The project was officially launched on 28th of September 2017 by Secretary to the Vice President and Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Mr. Clement W.S. Chinthu Phiri.   Following the launch of the project a Project Coordination Unit has been established and all the key positions for the PCU has been filled.  Meetings were held in 21 districts to brief the district officials on the project and its implementation strategy and the expected results. The sensitization meetings enhanced the understanding of district level officials about their roles in project implementation.

This project is financed through a grant of US$12,294,545 from Green Climate Fund (GCF), US$1,800,000 from UNDP TRAC resources and US$2,170,000 in kind contribution  from the Government of Malawi. 

The project supports achievement of outcome 1.3 of the United Nations Development
Assistance Framework (UNDAF), which seeks to ensure that targeted
population in selected districts benefit from effective management of
environment, natural resources, climate change and disaster risk by 2018.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The project contributes to the achievement of the following SDGs:

  • SDG 1-End poverty in all its forms-everywhere (Target 5)
  • SDG 2-End hunger achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable Agriculture(Target 4)
  • SDG 11-Make cities and human settlements inclusive,safe,resilient,sustainable (Target 11.5)
  • SDG 13-Take urgent action to combat climate and its impacts
