Vice President and Minister responsible for Disaster Management Affairs Everton Chimulirenji on Monday (29th July, 2019) called on people living in disaster-prone areas to move uplands.
Chimulirenji made the call at Mwalija Village in T/A Kasisi, Chikwawa, where the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) and Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) are building transitional houses for people who were living in disaster-prone areas and voluntarily moved uplands.
“Let us not put our lives in danger by clinging to disaster-prone areas, life is a right and we need to safeguard it,” said Chimulirenji.
The Vice President then commended MRCS and CADECOM for constructing the houses for the flood-affected people saying government appreciates the role stakeholders play in implementing disaster risk management (DRM) programmes in the country.
Chimulilenji assured the affected people that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s led administration will ensure that it provides them with basic social amenities such as health and education.
During Chimulirenji’s visit, government, through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, provided 1,000 iron sheets and 600 bags of rice, each weighing 50kgs, to the affected people.
